I recently had a Space Party. It came about as my other half had bought us Nasa styled Space Suits, so I thought having a party was a great excuse to wear them. So started the exploration of how to prepare a cake with a space theme. I’m no cake decorator – I like to bake but the finer aspects of decorating is still a bit hit and miss for me. But I came across a basic rocket ship design that I felt pretty confident even I could pull off – and thanks to help from my good friend Emma, we did indeed decorate it satisfactorily.

Here’s the cake with the obligatory candles. It wasn’t anyone’s birthday, but we just had to light it! Those are M & Ms on the cake.
The actual cake was a chocolate sponge recipe from Brett – an NZ Masterchef winner. I actually doubled the recipe as I made quite a large cake. The sponge was delicious and turned out perfectly, I can highly recommend it.
