I spotted this duck while I was out photographing Royal Spoonbills in McCormacks Bay today. I’d never seen this type of duck before and initially thought it was a goose. According to Wikipedia, the Muscovy Duck is a native of Mexico and feral Muscovy Duck are in New Zealand. They just don’t cross paths with me very often! I was quite stumped as to what type of bird it was. I thought a goose, but then thought, no it’s a kind of duck, and then turned to Facebook and had my answer in seconds.
The duck was quite friendly – I suspect he gets fed.
The photos of the spoonbills were ok, but I was frustrated that I couldn’t get closer to them as the road running by the estuary is now closed for repairs.
