Kingfisher in a Gum Tree

kingfisherA New Zealand Kingfisher. They are quite interesting birds and I see a lot of them perched high up on power lines and trees. They especially like the large gum trees in our local area and dine out on the fish in the estuary we have near us. They are quite noisy with a call that sounds like ‘kek kek kek’. It goes quiet in the winter though, they seem to disappear with them returning in early spring. They are probably at their noisiest in Spring – it quite often drives me a little bonkers when there are two of them calling back and forth to each other. Still, I enjoy watching them and photographing them when I am fast enough as they will only tolerate me getting so close and then they are off.
